Our Ethos

Affordable, high quality training with no politics.

Our club was founded by our friend Marcus Trower, who tragically passed away a few years back. Marcus started the Brighton Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Exchange because he was frustrated with how expensive it was to train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) in Brighton, especially for those who were looking to get in to the sport. Driven by his passion for BJJ, Marcus started his own school where members could pay a low fee for every training session, making BJJ affordable to everyone. Marcus would even lend new students a gi (training jacket) and a belt for their first few lessons so that they didn’t have to invest in the kit before they were sure they wanted to take up BJJ for a longer period. The school he founded also refrained from asking new students to pay a joining fee – something that Marcus saw as an unnecessary expense.

When Marcus passed away, we (his friends) were too grateful and inspired to let his school simply vanish. We now run the school in his memory and maintain his values and ethos.

High Quality Training

Please don’t think that affordable BJJ means that our teaching isn’t of the highest quality. We are constantly making an effort effort to expand our knowledge and teaching philosophies. Our students get a lot of individual attention and personal development. We train under renowned black belt Jack Magee.

Affordable Jiu Jitsu

We charge just £6 for a lesson that is an hour and a half long – with discounts if you make 3 classes in the same calendar week. You can train as little or as often as you want.

No Politics

We will never look down or discourage any students from training at other BJJ schools. Marcus just wanted people to train Jiu Jitsu and that is a passion that we carry to this day. You can train at our school occasionally and another school often, as long as you are training, we are happy.

We also shy away from a lot of the traditional formalities that BJJ and martial arts tend to encourage. We have a traditional belt system but that is about it. You can often find our white belts mocking the senior belts and having a laugh – at the end of the day we are all mates and are here to help each other progress.
